According to Indian Express and Reuters news agency on the 7th (local time), a torrent occurred as a glacier fell below Mt. Mount Nandadebi reaches an altitude of 7817m above sea level. The glaciers that fell from high ground wrecked the dam, causing rapid rapids to sweep around the dam.
An eyewitness told Reuters, “There was an avalanche mixed with glaciers with a roaring noise, and there was a rapid flood.”
Disaster authorities in India estimate that more than 100 people, including workers at the Rishiganga hydroelectric power plant and residents of nearby villages, are missing. Authorities said that three bodies have been recovered near the power plant so far, and 16 people trapped in the dam underground tunnel are safe. The authorities are carrying out rescue operations by dispatching 200 people, including the military, police, and disaster response teams. The Indian Air Force was put into an air search.
