Dam Collapse in Southern Ukraine: Ukraine and Russia Blame Each Other for the Disaster

The US deputy ambassador to the UN said on Wednesday night Norwegian time that it is unclear who is to blame for the dam collapse in southern Ukraine.

What caused the collapse on Tuesday night has not yet been determined. Large areas in Kherson county are flooded, and around 17,000 people have been evacuated.

Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of being behind the destruction.

– Mass destruction

In the urgently called meeting of the UN Security Council late on Tuesday evening, the council members discussed the situation surrounding the damaged Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine.

– My delegation submitted a request for this emergency meeting in the Security Council, after Putin’s regime has detonated a bomb with mass destruction of the environment, which has led to the biggest man-made disaster in Europe, says Ukraine’s UN ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya to the Security Council on Tuesday evening.

The Ukrainian delegate does not hide the fact that they believe Russia is behind the atrocity in Kherson.

– This is an act of terrorism against critical Ukrainian infrastructure, which aims to cause as many civilian deaths as possible and create as much destruction as possible.

– Well planned

The background for the attack is, according to Kyslytsya, that the Russian authorities realize that the occupied areas in Ukraine do not belong to Russia and that they are unable to hold on to the areas any longer.

– Propaganda shown on Russian TV in foreign affairs indicates that this was well planned in advance.

Kyslytsya refers to a letter from Vladimir Putin which is said to have circulated already in October last year, which he believes is one of the elements of Russia’s strategy.

– The Russian statements today have therefore been predictable and deceitful. We have observed the same techniques, of blaming the victim for their own criminal acts.

The Ukrainian delegate claims that Russia desperately denies war crimes committed both in Mariupol, Butsha, Izium and Zaporizhzhya, and says there is therefore little chance that they will therefore admit to today’s attack on the dam.
