Dallas Stars Acquire Defenseman Chris Tanev in Trade Deal, Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils Also Involved

Handel

Dallas Stars gets: Defenseman Chris Tanev, goalkeeper Cole Brady

Get the Calgary Flames: Defenseman Artem Grushnikov, Stars’ 2024 second-round pick, 2026 conditional third-round pick.

New Jersey Devils get: Stars’ 2026 fourth-round pick to retain 50 percent of Tanev’s salary.

Sean Gentile: Overall, this doesn’t seem like a bad deal for the Flames. At least not at first. chooses and probability? surely. This is the public price for a man like Chris Tanev – talented, battle-hardened, right-handed, older but not too old, and the UFA is waiting for him. This brings you something beautiful, if not something great.

However, each new piece of information made the deal a little worse for Calgary. The top pick goes into the second round? Yes. The prospect is not Logan Stankoven or Maverick Burke. Hmmm. I like it less. Will the Flames keep 50% of Tanev’s salary? We are now in “ultimate winner and ultimate loser” territory.

It’s not a disaster for Flames GM Craig Conroy. However, it’s definitely a disappointment. Tanev is still just good; For all the reasons we mentioned before, he’s the type of competitive player who looks good. The fact that Conroy had to add a candy and still couldn’t beat the No. 1 player or a better prospect is bizarre. Artem Grushnikov was ranked 10th in Scott Wheeler’s prospect star rankings and in the “has a chance” category of Corey Pronman’s preseason rankings earlier this month. He’s tall, a good skater and has limited offensive skills, Bronman said.

Tanev’s injury history is long and the teams that could have used him the most – like Vancouver and Toronto – may not have been Conroy’s preferred dance partners. All of this must be taken into account. But accepting a seemingly minimal reward nine days before the deadline seems like a rookie mistake.

On the side of the stars everything is love. GM Jim Nill had almost no available space to fill the glaring hole on the right side of his defense, and he took advantage of that with the best option on the market. Incorporating an Eastern Conference team was an added layer of creativity. If Tanev’s shoulder holds up, he will give them an ideal option to play behind Miro Heiskanen. Tanev is a defenseman who thrives on winning the puck and playing crucial minutes. Whether he takes a step back offensively or not is almost irrelevant; Stars get a lot of that elsewhere. They’re preparing for a Stanley Cup run, and they’re doing it the right way: with an OGWAC that can actually play.

Sheena Goldman: This is an absolute victory for the Stars. Dallas had one clear need before the deadline: a consistent right-handed hitter. This was before Nils Lundqvist’s injury. This was the only area in which the team fell short as measured by the Stanley Cup checklist. With Tanev, he is now number 3 on the team, moving the rest of the blue line into more appropriate roles behind him.

With Thomas Harley in the top pair, the Stars’ defense is a bit overloaded. So this addition changes that – whether he’s behind that pair, forming a cohesive pair with Esa Lindell in the second, or running alongside Harley or Miro Heiskanen at the end for a more balanced approach. In any case, this allows the stars to better protect their lower pairs.

Tanev’s offense has declined this year, but he’s not completely one-dimensional. A traditional stop-and-play player, he also loves recovering pucks and moving them out of his own zone in a controlled manner, which can help eliminate the Stars’ breakthroughs. His game is at some risk of injury and that will likely impact the future development of his game. Therefore, the fact that the Stars brought him in without any future commitment is a plus.

A slightly proactive approach also benefits the stars. Having him for a possible four more games instead of waiting until the deadline would help the race for the No. 1 quarterback spot.

For Calgary, however, this is a real disappointment. This matter was not brought up at the deadline and the Flames had to settle because there were no better options. The deadline is more than a week away, which should have been plenty of time to promote Calgary. There was a lot of interest in Tanev across the league. So what does it look like? The Flames’ best return, especially with 50 percent salary retention? There are interesting elements to Artem Grushnikov’s game, but Calgary should have looked for someone with more security and upside without a first-round pick in the rematch. The only advantage for the Flames is that management knows what to do and won’t risk waiting for the UFAs to come up empty just to start another run.
