DALLAS – The City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture will begin the 2022 calendar year with a new Chairperson of the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission, Ella Goode Johnson.
Nominated by Mayor Eric Johnson and unanimously confirmed by the City Council, President Johnson has over 5 years of service on the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission, representing District 3.
The commission was tasked with implementing the 2018 Dallas Cultural Plan, which addresses Equity, Diversity, Space for the Arts, Support for Artists, and Sustainable Ecosystem for Art, as well as communications about of the arts. More than 9,000 Dallas residents participated in this effort and it was unanimously approved by the City Council. Johnson is the first black woman to chair the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission.
For the past four years, Johnson served as Chair of the Appropriations Committee which directs all funding programs for the Commission. This Committee recommends more than $ 6.5 million in funding each year, directed to more than 125 arts and artists organizations.
“Particularly during the pandemic, I have been targeting these funding efforts with a flexible and responsive approach to best support a troubled arts industry,” Johnson said.
With Ella Goode Johnson serving as Chairperson of the City of Dallas Arts and Culture Advisory Commission, the new year promises to be one of continued recovery and growth for the entire Dallas arts ecosystem. The following can be highlighted: the reopening of the Craft House, the work to update the economic impact report (AEP6), and the investment of $ 250,000 recently received by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA, for its which represents the largest NEA funding ever received by OAC.
