Bhopal: A Dalit youth was beaten to death by around 100 people after his sister filed a sexual harassment complaint. The incident took place in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh. The slain 18-year-old’s sister and mother were beaten up. The complaint also states that the mother was made naked while trying to save her son.
In 2019, the young man’s sister filed a complaint against four people for threatening and beating him. Four people were arrested in the incident. The case is currently in court. The woman says that some people were constantly asking her to withdraw the complaint. This is the reason for the attack.
The mother said that the mob brutally beat up her son. The son could not escape. He made himself naked. She said that the police gave her a towel and she had to stand wearing it until the saree was given to her. The house was invaded and the belongings destroyed. The mother said that the crowd then went looking for her other two children. The relative of the murdered youth said that the mob barged into the house and threatened her husband and children.
The police informed that eight people have been arrested in the incident. Nine people will be charged with murder. The police also stated that charges under the SCST Act will be filed against the three persons.
The incident has led to massive protests in Madhya Pradesh, where the elections are about to be held. The opposition Congress and Mayawati’s BSP have criticized the ruling BJP. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP of turning Madhya Pradesh into a laboratory for Dalit atrocities.
