Dale Hawerchuk’s cancer comes back

Hockey Hall of Fame member Dale Hawerchuk is struggling with a recurrence of stomach cancer.

It was his son Eric who made the announcement on Twitter on Sunday. Hawerchuk has been in remission since undergoing his last chemotherapy treatment on April 13.

The 57-year-old man was diagnosed with cancer when he went to hospital due to reflux in the stomach last August. He also underwent a gastrectomy, the removal of part of the stomach, in January.

In 1,188 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Winnipeg Jets, Buffalo Sabers, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers, Hawerchuk scored 518 goals and totaled 1,409 points. He was inducted into the Pantheon in 2001.

The Jets also gave their support to the family on Twitter in the early afternoon.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Dale Hawerchuk and his family as he begins another round in his courageous battle with cancer,” we read. Dale has always faced his toughest opponents head-on and we know it won’t be any different this time around. ”

“He is a beloved member of the Winnipeg community and one of the greatest players to ever wear the Jets uniform. We all know [les partisans] support him in his fight. “

Hawerchuk was also head coach of the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He got the role in 2010, taking time off when he learned he had cancer.
