It is at the foot of two giant baobabs, in the heart of the savannah in Senegal, that the 18th edition of the Dakar fashion week was launched during the Covid-19 period.
Inspired in 2003 by the famous Senegalese designer Adama Paris, Dakar Fashion Week has since become the crossroads of African creativity to conquer the world.
Each year, the event brings together designers and lovers of African fashion from all over the continent.
During these few days, Dakar vibrates to the rhythm of fashion shows, but also conferences, workshops, themed evenings, with fashion, beauty, creativity and talent as a common thread.
As with each edition, the organizers reiterate their commitment to highlight the diversity, talent, and originality of the many designers on the continent who breathe a wind of revolution into the world of African and increasingly international fashion.
Young shoots in the world of African design are getting noticed internationally, through sought-after and sophisticated creations which seek above all to tell stories, the still too little known stories of Africa.
Over the past five years, for example, young African designers have stormed into the celebrity world seeing their designs worn by celebrities like Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, etc. This is the case, for example, of Sarah Diouf, founder of the Tongoro brand who was fortunate to see Beyoncé wearing several of her creations and promoting them on her social media disputes, which have now become the main launch portals. trends.
Others like Fatima Zahra Ba, founder of the So’fatoo brand, make their work known by revisiting traditional fabrics such as the woven loincloth, with which she creates elegant outfits, which, as she likes to recall, “draw their source from African royalties ”.
According to the organizers, this year the Dakar Fashion Week will celebrate fashion by revealing the cultural riches of Africa. Beyond the parades to detect new designers, it will also be a question of associating craftsmanship and music with this fashion meeting and will make it possible to propel young Senegalese designers on the international scene.
