The National Assembly rejected the candidacy of Prof. Nikolai Gabrovsky for the Prime Minister, appointed with the first mandate of the GERB-SDS. MPs from the parliamentary groups GERB-SDS, DPS, “Bulgarian Rise” gave their support. BSP, “Let’s Keep the Change”, “Democratic Bulgaria” and “Vazrazhdane” were against.
Evgeny Dainov, a political scientist and lecturer at the NBU, told BNR that he had been following with interest the preparations to support this cabinet, which he described as “artillery”: “Agencies and sociology experts rallied to trumpet that the cabinet must approve in this composition.In this context, some interventions in the courtroom were strange, such as those of Delyan Dobrev and Nicolai Pavlov. It all turned into a clear message that this government was created to put Petkov in prison. That’s how the chances of this cabinet decreased dramatically.”
The GERB closes itself in isolation, Dainov also underlined: “It is one thing to cling to the third mandate and have the image of a reasonable and responsible party at the national level, another is to expect that those who disagree with them will lie in prison. GERB hanged themselves today”.
The political scientist explained that he has always been against personification in Bulgarian politics. He described the ministerial candidates presented as “second-hand politicians from the recent past”.
Dainov believes that the PP government has managed to avoid the outbreak of crises: “At the moment they are easing in Bulgaria and throughout Europe. There are no real crises, obviously no one will die of cold in winter”.
He underlined that the official ideology of the GERB is that in the last two years Bulgarians have realized that they are the stable ones: “But their behavior says the exact opposite: they shout and threaten in the plenary hall. GERB and DPS internally are extremely unsure of governing the situation and being able to handle it. That’s why they attack.”
PP and DB should take over the second mandate and tell GERB that if they want to be perceived as European politicians, they should support him without asking for anything, he advised.
“We need to present a good government composition and good policies. The situation is changing badly, also due to the enormous pressure that the war in Ukraine is also exerting on Bulgaria. The main problem is that Bulgaria is trying to escape the model Boyko Borisov, as Todor Zhivkov’s model has escaped. It took ten years, this won’t happen in ten days either. “Enough Bulgarians are telling them to leave, but they say they have enough resources to stay.”
I suspect that the alleged entry of “Bulgarian Rise” into parliament was aimed at obtaining a third term, he said: “I bet it will be for them. Around the party of Stefan Yanev the majority will be done with GERB and DPS”.
Dainov does not expect all plans for a third term to come true: “Today there was such an upheaval that until then they will tremble.”
