Daina Markova has become the executive director of the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival

Daina Markova has been selected as the executive director of the XXVII General Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival in the competition, informs Linda Ertmane, a representative of the Latvian National Cultural Center (LNKC).

From LNKC’s point of view, Markova has experience in managing large-scale projects and events, many years of experience in planning and managing team work, as well as experience in cooperation with state and municipal institutions. She has worked for VSIA “Latvijas Televīzija” for more than 20 years and from 2013 to 2019 she was a member of the board of VSIA “Latvian National Opera and Ballet”. Markov will start working at LNKC on March 1.

The organizer of the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival LNKC announced a competition for the position of the Executive Director of the festival in December 2021 and received a total of seven applications from applicants. The competition took place in three rounds – in the first, in accordance with the regulations, the participants were selected by evaluating the submitted applications. The second round was a semi-structured interview in which applicants had the opportunity to present their vision, while the third round assessed the applicants’ competencies and a personality test.

The compliance of the applicants with the position of the executive director of the festival was evaluated by a commission established by LNKC. It was chaired by Dace Vilsone, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Signe Pujāte, Director of the LNKC, Mārtiņš Klišāns, a representative of the choir branch of the Song and Dance Festival Council, Zanda Mūrniece, a representative of the dance branch of the Song and Dance Festival Council, Liene Kubilius, Member of the Board of the Latvian Association of Employees, and Baiba Moļņika, Secretary General of the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO.

Folk art groups – choirs, dance groups, wind orchestras, kokle ensembles, vocal ensembles, amateur theaters, folklore groups, folk music ensembles – folk applied art studios – from all 43 Latvian municipalities, as well as Latvian diaspora, participate in the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival. . 40,000 thousand participants make the Song and Dance Festival the largest public event in Latvia. The 17th General Latvian Song and Dance Festival will take place from June 30 to July 9, 2023.
