Daimler Group recalls 2.6 million Mercedes-Benz cars in China after recalling another 1.29 million US cars

German group Daimler AG will recall 2.6 million Mercedes-Benz cars in service in China due to a possible problem with the automatic emergency call system, the Beijing market regulator announced on Friday, DPA and Reuters reported.

The software may not be able to correctly communicate the location of the vehicle in the event of an accident, Chinese authorities said. The issue can be resolved by updating the automatic emergency call system software.

China is the largest car market in the world.

Daimler representatives confirmed the recall, but did not specify how many vehicles were affected.

Last month, 1.29 million Mercedes-Benz cars were recalled for service in the United States for a similar reason.

China will remain Mercedes-Benz’s largest market for the next decade, and the German group will adjust its production units to cope with changing demand amid rising global trade tensions, Daimler AG CEO Ola Kaellenius said recently.

His statement comes amid escalating trade tensions between the US, China and Europe, after nearly a decade of growth helped Mercedes become the world’s best-selling luxury brand.

Due to strong demand from China, Daimler and German rivals Volkswagen and BMW released results beyond expectations in 2020.

“In the next ten years, we also expect to see the most significant growth rate in China, the luxury car manufacturer will follow the market,” Kallenius explained.

But amid escalating global trade tensions, the outlook for global car sales remains uncertain.

Daimler owns the luxury division Mercedes-Benz and the Smart brand.

In Romania, Daimler has two production units, in Cugir and Sebeş.
