The use of antidepressants is complex. You have different types of antidepressants, people and types of depression. This means that not everyone reacts in the same way to one type of medicine. All different types of antidepressant drugs aim to increase the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is also called the hormone of happiness and affects, among other things, mood, self-confidence and sleep.
However, depression is so complex that adding serotonin alone is not enough. “When people in the Netherlands start a treatment plan, it’s done in stages. If the first stage doesn’t work, it goes to stage two,” says Ramakers. This can mean that a patient is being given stronger medications or a mix of different medications.
