1. Smoking

Smoking makes individuals more susceptible to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can lead to blurred central vision.

Studies indicate that smoking increases the chances of developing delayed age-related macular degeneration by approximately four times, and also confirm that people who smoke have a higher rate of developing AMD five years earlier than those who never smoke.

2. Staring at screens

3. Not wearing sunglasses

Most people are aware of the dangers that sun exposure can cause to the skin, but many forget that the sun’s harmful effects on eye tissue, including the lens and cornea, can cause cataracts and cancer.

Wearing sunglasses is a simple way to protect yourself from the harmful effects of UV rays and prevent the formation of cataracts.

4. Sleeping with contact lenses

The safety profile of contact lenses depends on how they are worn. They are not designed for sleeping. When this happens, bacteria can get trapped between the lens and the cornea. When used incorrectly and in a persistent manner, a serious eye infection can develop, leading to permanent eye damage. .

A report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicated that about one in three contact lens users admit to sleeping or napping in them. 7 This increases the risk of contact lens-related infections six to eight times.

5. Rub your eyes

Although it’s not dangerous to rub your eyes occasionally, doing so frequently and forcefully can damage the cornea, the sensitive surface of the eye.

A condition known as keratoconus occurs when the tissue covering the front surface of the eye begins to thin and bulge outward into a cone shape, and blurry and distorted vision may follow, so it is best to avoid rubbing the eye too much.

6. Sleep before removing makeup

Sometimes, sleeping with makeup on will not harm your eyes, but doing so habitually may worsen dry eye disease and increase your chance of infection and inflammation of the capillaries in the eye.
