The week started with 5,214 corona infections, that number dropped to 3,979 on Tuesday, ended again at 5,790 on Friday and today the RIVM reported 4499 new corona infections. Because the number of reported infections fluctuates enormously, there does not seem to be a level on the development of the virus in the Netherlands. However, that is not the case, say the GGD and RIVM.
According to them, it would be better to look at the weekly figures. These provide a better picture, because daily figures are subject to all kinds of factors. For example, at the beginning of the week there is a lot more testing, people who have been tested during the weekend appear to get a positive result more often and the daily figures are sometimes incorrect due to faults.
How about that?
According to GGD spokesperson Sonja Kloppenburg, it has everything to do with the number of tests that are administered every day. One day, many more tests are taken than the other. That is why it is important to look at the percentage of positive test results: the number of infections compared to the number of tests that were administered that day.
That percentage, the so-called infection rate, changes much more evenly than the number of daily infections, says the GGD.
Today there are 1282 fewer infections than Friday. On Friday there were just 1,292 more than Thursday. That means, if you look at the figures for the past two days, that the day that counted for Friday, relatively more was tested. And the day that counted for today less has been tested. The level of contamination these days is the same.
