Daily deaths from COVID-19 in Russia hit another record

MOSCOW (AP) – Confirmed coronavirus deaths in Russia hit another record Tuesday at 852, Russia’s state COVID-19 task force reported Friday. The previous record was 828.

Daily coronavirus infections in Russia had fallen from more than 20,000 in late August to around 18,000 in mid-September, but the numbers are picking up again.

Since last Thursday, the state task force has reported more than 21,000 new cases a day. There were 21,559 new infections on Tuesday.

Despite the increase, there are few restrictions in Russia, which imposed a six-week lockdown last spring. Vaccination rates have also remained low: just 32% of the country’s 146 million people have received at least one vaccine injection and only 28% are fully vaccinated.

Russia has confirmed some 7.4 million COVID-19 cases and more than 205,000 deaths. However, reports from the government statistical service Rosstat indicate that the coronavirus-related death count retroactively reveals much higher mortality figures.
