Daihatsu Exports from Indonesia Return to Normal After Safety Test Scandal

Jakarta

Exports of Daihatsu cars made in Indonesia have returned to normal. Previously, exports were stopped following a safety test manipulation scandal.

Daihatsu has temporarily stopped distributing its cars following the findings of manipulation of safety tests by an independent committee team. Not only in Japan, Daihatsu cars made in Indonesia that were sent abroad were also affected by this case. PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) also stopped distributing cars in the domestic and export markets.

Soon, the distribution of Daihatsu cars in the domestic market gradually returned to normal as of December 22 2023. Following that, exports of Daihatsu cars made in Indonesia also began to be sent back to destination countries.

“The export market has also been resumed in stages starting December 26 2023 to more than 60 export destination countries, after receiving confirmation from the authorities in the export destination countries,” wrote Daihatsu in an official statement received by detikOto.

Daihatsu also reiterated that the procedural irregularities found in Japan had no impact on its cars in Indonesia. For this reason, Daihatsu car owners don’t need to worry about the safety of their vehicles.

“As stated in the previous official statement, all Daihatsu vehicles produced, distributed and marketed in Indonesia do not have quality and safety problems, and comply with the regulations in force in Indonesia. So customers can still use their vehicles safely and comfortably,” explained Daihatsu.

While in Indonesia it has returned to normal, in Japan distribution is still stopped. So far, it is not yet known when the Daihatsu factory will roar again following the safety testing scandal which affected a number of car models around the world.

In the Kyodo News report, the brand from Sakura Country stopped its operational activities at the factory in the Osaka Prefecture area, where Daihatsu Copen is produced. Of the four Daihatsu factories in Japan, the factory in Osaka prefecture was the last to stop operating. It was stated that the production halt would continue until the end of January. Daiahtsu said this was a blow to its 8,000 suppliers as well as its parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation.

As a small car manufacturer from the Toyota business unit, Daihatsu normally produces 4,000 cars per day in Japan. With up to 9,000 workers in Japanese factories, Daihatsu has produced 870,000 cars in the 2022 fiscal year. This temporary cessation of production has certainly made workers quite worried.

However, Daihatsu said it had agreed on compensation with the labor union to pay part of employees’ salaries while production activities were stopped.
