Dagbladet Journalists Surprised by Thunderstorm in Oslo: Unpredictable Weather in the Forecast

At around 5.40pm on Monday evening, several Dagbladet journalists with fragile Monday nerves jumped on the roof when a thunderstorm rolled over Oslo.

But the surprise was quickly replaced by wonder – because it was really bad weather on Monday night?

– There have been quite a few rain showers a little north of Oslo throughout the day. Now it has come towards Oslo. It doesn’t always look so good on Yr – that’s true. The weather forecast isn’t great at always picking up these showers either – they can miss them occasionally.

This is what meteorologist on duty Eldbjørg Moxnes tells Dagbladet.

– This generally applies to rain showers, which are generated by solar heating throughout the day. The sun heats up the air, and then such showers come throughout the afternoon and evening. They are often difficult, she says.

Gives greater hope: – Look to Tromsø!

– Unsure

Moxnes emphasizes that the meteorologists expected rain on Monday evening – but not necessarily in Oslo.

– It is often the case that the forecasts have rain showers, but it does not necessarily look so good in Oslo if the weather model has not placed them there, but for example in Lillestrøm.

Yr users in Lillestrøm will then receive a warning that a shower is coming, but Oslo residents will not, she explains.

– But the storm can just as easily hit Oslo as Lillestrøm.

She cannot rule out that there will be more thunderstorms during the evening.

– Thunderstorms, was that also announced – just not for Oslo?

– It was a bit uncertain. It was most likely that there would be no thunder today, says Moxnes at 18.00.

Recommend precipitation map

At that time, there had been no thunderstorms elsewhere than in the capital on Monday evening.

– Otherwise, there have been quite a few showers to the north, throughout the entire interior. Lillestrøm and further north, and of course in central Norway. But there hasn’t been any thunder, so it was exactly the shower that came over Oslo now, which suddenly caused some tension, says Moxnes.

The meteorologist recommends the public to use the precipitation map in the Yr app.

– Then you see it if there are showers in the area, and then you can think that the shower might as well come towards you.

The rainfall map also shows the movements of the rain showers on the map, explains Moxnes.

– Then you see if they are going this way or that way – and if they are heading towards where you are. It’s really the best thing to look at in such stormy situations.

Arousing attention: Fake

The police: – Be careful

The Oslo police urges the public to be careful in a message on its Twitter/X page.

– This was the day we were supposed to dry up a bit. It didn’t work out that way. Heavy rainfall in the last hour is causing problems with traffic flow in several places, the police write.

The police report that water has accumulated in the roadway in several places in Oslo, Asker and Bærum.

According to Moxnes, it will not necessarily get better during the week.

– It will still be a bit unstable going forward. There may be more showers tomorrow as well. The weather is not very stable at the moment, but by the weekend there may be an improvement for South-Eastern Norway, which has had a lot of rain lately.
