It is around 1 a.m. on August 9, 2020, when Logan Hannecart sends a message to his father: “Dad, I did something stupid… Here’s the stupid thing I did: I killed someone. I’ll call you back later by Messenger… “. He calls him back a quarter of an hour later and films a man, bathed in blood. He tells him that he killed the victim with a knife.
Less than an hour later, Logan is behind the wheel of a car on a private property on the street Old Hate in Jemappes. He tries to get out of the yard by forcing the entrance gate to the yard. His maneuvers wake up the owner of the premises who thinks he is dealing with a thief.
Armed with a hammer, the owner goes into the yard and is surprised to see a stranger in the car of Casimiro Da Rocha Barbosa, a tenant who has come from Portugal to work for a subcontractor of Next. “I am a colleague of Casimiro, he lent me his vehicle“, declares the young man seated behind the steering wheel.
The owner calls the police
The owner of the building is suspicious and calls the police, while the young man still tries to flee by forcing the gate. He stops her from leaving by hitting the vehicle with his hammer.
The police arrive at 2:03 a.m. The car is damaged but the police decide not to search it, thinking they are faced with simple facts of damage. They are content to take the identity of the young man, Logan Hannecart. The young man is calm and shows no traces of blows or blood. According to a neighbor, he wears clothes from the firm Nextway too big for him.
Logan declares to be a friend of Casimiro who, he says, would have given him the keys of the vehicle before returning to Mons to his girlfriend. He would have forgotten the portal code. The police try to call Casimiro but they go straight to his voicemail. They let Logan go, unaware that they just released a killer.
Stabbed and scalped
It’s 3:00 p.m. and Casimiro still hasn’t returned home. Worried, its owner calls the police because he noticed the presence of traces of blood on the door of the apartment rented by the Portuguese. The police force the door and discover the lifeless body of Casimiro.
He is lying on his stomach, naked with a sheet covering his lower body. On the ground, a ceramic knife and splashes of blood. The victim was stabbed in the chest. Part of the upper face is scalped.
Logan Hannacart is the number one suspect, but he fled. He is spotted on the images of the Mons station surveillance cameras at 4:05 a.m. and 5:20 a.m. on August 9, 2020. Then it is a treasure hunt between Mons and Namur, where Logan is domiciled. On August 18, Logan Hannecart was arrested at the rue de Stassart in Namur.
His trial begins Monday before the Assize Court of Hainaut. He must answer for a murder and the theft of several objects. The relatives of the victim, who live in Portugal, will not travel to Mons. The witnesses will be heard until Tuesday evening.
