Daan Schuurmans was bullied a lot as a child and that left its mark. The 51-year-old actor says this in the program Stars on the Canvas.

At that time he mainly took his parents into account. “You don’t want your parents to know. That is one of the worst things about bullying. You try to pretend that nothing is wrong,” he says in the program, which will be broadcast on Saturday.

It took a while before Schuurmans no longer let his guard down at social occasions. “It made me who I am. It shapes your character.”

In the episode, Schuurmans also talks about the bond with his father, who died when Schuurmans was 25 years old. “He could be very complimentary and soft at times,” says Schuurmans. “Certainly in the last months before his death, then of course all masks fall off.”

In the last period of his father’s life, everything was “spoken out”, says the actor. “We didn’t really have to say anything to each other anymore. So that was nice.”

Schuurmans is known for his roles in The story of the Netherlands, Bernhard, rascal of Orange, The Oss gang in Mocro Mafia. The episode of Stars on the Canvas around the actor will be broadcast on NPO2 on Saturday evening at 8.40 pm.
