D66 MP: ‘Cabinet, stop conversations with Farmers Defense Force’

He made that statement in the program 1 on 1 on NPO Radio 1. “At some point you have to say: we are not going to be serious about this. Ready,” says De Groot. He already sharpened the relationships in the coalition in September when he called for the livestock to be halved in order to solve the nitrogen problem.

Moreover, it is a waste of time because FDF will run away from the negotiating table and the group refuses to be flexible, De Groot believes. “I say to the government: go govern and keep going. Don’t waste your time with groups that don’t want to compromise.”

It simply makes no sense to keep talking, De Groot concludes. In addition, FDF has “disqualified itself as a serious interlocutor” by taking this position, he says.

Farmers protest

FDF is the driving force behind the farmers’ protests that are taking place in The Hague today and earlier protests involving large numbers of farmers with tractors. But the group is also one of the thirteen organizations that are affiliated with the Agricultural Collective, the cabinet’s regular discussion partner.

Discussions with that collective were suspended earlier this month following impending statements from FDF about sector organizations that talk to the cabinet outside that collective. The farmers’ group also became discredited when foreman Mark van den Oever compared the way farmers are treated with the Holocaust.
