“D66 Members Discuss Nitrogen Policy and Coalition Relations at Congress After Elections”

BBB’s monstrous victory has put relations within the coalition on edge, particularly when it comes to nitrogen policy, an important theme for D66 supporters. That theme will be discussed: D66 members vote on a motion to be more flexible with 2030 as the deadline for the intended result of the nitrogen policy.

In addition to the nitrogen dossier, the course of the government coalition is also an important point for members. After the elections in 2021, D66 initially did not want to govern again with VVD, CDA and the ChristenUnie, but nevertheless entered into negotiations. The party was able to drag many important points into the coalition agreement, but some topics are now up for discussion again.

For example, there is not only disagreement about the nitrogen approach, but D66, together with the ChristenUnie, is also diametrically opposed to the other two coalition parties when it comes to asylum.

Collaboration with ‘left cloud’

But other points are also under discussion. For example, a vote is being taken on a proposal to cooperate more with the ‘left wing’ consisting of PvdA and GroenLinks, and the discussion has been stimulated in the party about the abolition of the royal family. Former party leader Alexander Pechtold recently called on members to vote in favor of a proposal to this effect, and the youth branch of the Young Democrats has also spoken out. “The monarchy has long passed its expiration date and that is why we as Young Democrats advocate abolishing it as soon as possible,” writes the D66 youth club in a manifesto for more direct democracy.
