“We spoke with Wayne and agreed it was best for us to part ways,” DC United CEO Jason Levin said in a statement.
The statement published by the club on its official website explained that the matter was a “mutual agreement.”
Rooney responded after the 2-0 victory over New York City on Saturday, which was not enough to qualify for the playoffs: “This is the right time. I did everything I could to lead this club to the playoffs.”
The former English international and Manchester United legend, who took over the technical management of the capital club in July 2022, failed to lead his team to the playoffs despite finishing the season in ninth place (40 points from 34 matches) in the Eastern Region, which is the last position to qualify for the rounds. Elimination, because his pursuers, New York Red Bulls (40 out of 33), Chicago Fire (40 out of 33), Charlotte (39 out of 32), and New York City (38 out of 33) have a chance to pass him.
