D, Alema to Mikov: The difference between the left and the right is fundamental –

/ world today news/ The Chairman of the National Assembly of the BSP, Mihail Mikov, met with the Chairman of the Foundation for European and Progressive Studies (FEPS) and former Prime Minister of Italy, Massimo D. Allema. FEPS is an organization that defends the principles and values on which the EU is based – freedom, equality, solidarity, democracy, protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and works in close relations with the PES.

The leader of the left presented to D. Alema the situation in our country, at the head of which, according to him, it is difficult to define a regime starting from the right, covering the center and including a party of former left politicians. He stated that the priority for the BSP is strengthening the identification and protection of leftist ideas and standards. The meeting also condemned the development of the leftist press. Mikov emphasized to the former editor-in-chief of the “Unitas” newspaper that the BSP continues to publish “Duma” magazine.

Among the topics discussed were the challenges facing Europe with refugees, Schengen, TTIP, the situation in Portugal, Greece and Western Europe.

Massimo D’Alema commented that Europe is in crisis, not only economic and social, but also political. He stated that it is most important for socialists to make it clear that the strategic response to this crisis is not to return to the national dimension, but to strengthen the political unity of Europe. According to him, it is important to tell young people that less Europe means less freedom, democracy and social justice. According to him, young people can be attracted to politics only if they are shown a long-term thinking that will cover their lives, and not just short-term decisions from today to tomorrow.

The participants in the meeting also commented on the fragmentation of the traditional left and right in Europe. D. Alema emphasized that a way of cooperation should be found, but also that social priorities should be enforced. In his words, when a party is in government, it must govern, but if it is in opposition, it must oppose. Sitting in the middle, he says, is a disaster. He pointed out that every party should have a clear list of priorities so that when it goes to its voters it can say: “Yes, we were in government and we achieved for you this, this and this”. Mikov agreed with the opinion of the former Italian Prime Minister and explained that it was for these reasons that BSP chose to be the opposition.

Massimo D. Alema is visiting Bulgaria to present one of the numerous projects of FEPS, the Millennium Dialogue. The large-scale research aims to establish the attitudes and priorities of young people between the ages of 15 and 34 in relation to socio-political life, young people and globalization. In addition to our country, the research was conducted in Germany, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Canada and the USA. Its main goal is to propose solutions for the return of young people to active socio-political positions based on the results obtained.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly of the BSP Dragomir Stoynev, the member of the IB of the National Assembly of the BSP and international secretary of the party Denitsa Zlateva, as well as the chief of staff of the Chairman of the BSP Boris Ivanov.
