Czechia requests legal assistance from Russia with investigation of Vrbětice explosions

The Czech Republic has requested legal assistance from the Russian Federation in the investigation of the 2014 Vrbětice explosions. Czech police and judicial authorities suspect two members of the Russian intelligence service of having placed explosives in ammunition stores in the region of Zlín that, consequently, caused the explosions.

The Brno prosecutor’s office indicated in a press release that it is impossible to estimate how long the investigation will take. He also added that this will also take place outside the Czech territory and that the cooperation of several European countries has been requested.

According to the prosecutor Martin Malůš, the movements and contacts of the suspects in the period linked to the events are being investigated. The investigators also seek to clarify the motives that led to the organization of the explosions.

According to the Deník N newspaper, Russia has already sent a reply. In view of protecting the interests of the Russian Federation, the country has refused to provide legal assistance, the newspaper reports.
