In the traditional holiday sale of old movies and series, you can still find a TV gem here and there, among which is definitely the premiere of an excellent Danish series “Medical School”. It was replaced by an equally valuable series on the first channel of Czech Television “Call the Midwives”. Like him, it offers viewers a very successful retro, reminding not only the level of healthcare in the post-war era of the last century, but also great medical advances.
At the same time, it is still relevant to a large extent today, it deals with, for example, the lack of medical personnel, which, despite all the progress, is a burning problem of our time. And various storylines are also timeless, in which of course there are also relationship and criminal ones. They show that doctors, nurses and brothers always deal with the same problems, whether they are problems in partner relationships, infidelity, unrequited love, unwanted pregnancy or rivalry at the workplace. More than in medical school classes, most of the episodes take place in the hospital where the students practice.
The epidemic of the fifties
What is different are the diseases that the patients fought with after the war. This is, for example, the polio epidemic, which affected thousands of children in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s, but was fortunately soon eradicated thanks to vaccination. The consequences of the war are reminiscent of some tense scenes, dedicated, for example, to the story of a girl who was scorned by her surroundings as a “Nazi mattress”, but in fact became one of the many victims of the Nazi will. The plot has a piquant touch, concerning a sexually passionate husband who has infected his elegant and honest wife with a very unpleasant venereal disease and is trying to hide it at all costs.
On the Danish wave
In addition to the authentic retro atmosphere, excellent actors (for example Morten Hee Andersen, Molly Blixt Egelind, Jen Jorg Spottag) contribute to the extraordinary popularity of this series. The leading actors are repeatedly nominated for the Danish Film Awards in the category of best actor and actress and today belong to the most prominent faces of the current Danish acting generation.
It’s incredible how many top series Danish TV producers have already managed to produce. Thanks to Czech Television, Czech viewers were able to watch many of them, in addition to the famous Nordic crime dramas, it is, for example, a very successful series “The government”revealing the behind-the-scenes of Danish politics (it became the most discussed in the history of this country, by the way) or the exciting drama mini-series recently shown on ČT “A Shout Without an Echo”dedicated to the complex issue of domestic violence.
