Czech tennis successes will be reminiscent of new marks. They goosebumps, says Štěpánek

Czech tennis has another memory of a successful history on its stamps. At the initiative of the 1973 Wimbledon winner Jan Kodeš, the Czech Post publishes 8,000 sheets of 25 stamps called Czech Tennis, which, according to the number of participants, are the most successful players in the Davis Cup and Fed Cup (today’s Billie Jean King Cup).

“History is to be honored and stamps are printed at a time when the country is proud to have achieved success and wants to boast. And a hundred years is a hundred years,” Kodeš said, adding that the motif is the centenary of Czechoslovakia’s entry into the Davis Cup. “That’s why something needed to be done and I didn’t just want to do men, because ladies are on the wave,” Kodeš recalled the successful period of recent Czech tennis players.

The sheet includes Helena Suková, Tomáš Šmíd, Hana Mandlíková, Ivan Lendl, Petra Kvitová, Jan Koželuh, Lucie Plekancová Šafářová, Jiří Javorský, Renata Tomanová, Jaroslav Drobný, Barbora Strýcová, Roderich Menzel, Jana Novotná and Tomáš Berdych.

“I have to pay tribute to Honza Kodeš for doing his job and make sure that history is not forgotten,” said Suková, who played the most matches in the team competition in the national team – 73. “I have always learned from history and I am honored “If we look at it, we will remember individual battles and goosebumps,” said Radek Štěpánek.

Thanks to Kodeš, a sheet of stamps for the 120th anniversary of Czech tennis was published eight years ago. “Everyone was there with trophies. Now I chose shots from matches with a racket and a ball if possible, because they are the most beautiful, but it was even harder,” said Kodeš, who had to get permission from the players and photographers to use and tried to the blows in the photos were directed to the center of the sheet.

He chose a photo for Lendl after winning the Davis Cup triumph in 1980. A few photos had to be exchanged at the request of the players, but most were without problems. “I would be satisfied with any photo, because it is an honor and an honor,” Suková stated.
