Czech Tennis Players Aim for Finals in Billie Jean King Cup 2021

The non-playing captain Petr Pála entered the seven-time Grand Slam champion Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final doubles. Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowská should play on the Canadian side. The composition may still change.

Twenty-seven-year-old Krejčíková will play singles for the first time in Seville. So far, she has only played in doubles with Siniakova. In the basic group, they first sealed a 3:0 triumph against the Swiss and secured a 2:1 victory against the USA in the decisive doubles.

This year’s Wimbledon winner Vondroušová intervened in the team competition after returning from the Tournament of Champions on Friday against the USA. In the match for promotion from group A, she outclassed Sofia Keninová twice 6:1 and equalized at 1:1. The 24-year-old native of Sokolov will attack in the national team for her 12th singles win in a row and her 14th overall.

The Czechs can advance to the final after five years. In the new format, which applies from 2021, they have not yet played for the title. Last year in the semi-finals, they were not enough for the Swiss in Glasgow. On the other hand, the Canadian women are in the semifinals for the first time since 1988. At this year’s tournament, the Billie Jean Kings have won all their matches so far, beating Spain and Poland 3:0 in the basic group C.

The first finalists are Italian women

If the Czech tennis players advance through Canada, they will face Italy on Sunday. The selection of captain Tathiana Garbinová defeated Slovenia in the semi-finals. The first point was secured by Martina Trevisanová, who beat Kaja Juvanová 7:6, 6:3, and Jasmine Paolini decided with a triumph over Tamara Zidanšeková 6:2, 4:6, 6:3.

The Italian women made it to the final after ten years. In 2013, they defeated Russia in the old format and won their fourth title. They dominated the team competition in 2006, 2009 and 2010. They are in the finals for the sixth time, but for the first time in a new format.

Slovenia played the semi-finals for the first time. In the basic group B at the final tournament, they defeated Australia and, thanks to a better ratio of sets, got into the top four teams of the competition, despite the subsequent defeat by Kazakhstan.
