Czech tennis player Barbora Krejčíková will be Russia’s rival Anastasia Pavlučenková in the women’s singles final at the Roland Garros grand slam tournament on Saturday.
In the second semifinal, she eliminated the seventeen-seeded Maria Sakkari from Greece after a three-hour three-hour battle 7: 5, 4: 6, 9: 7. Krejčíková and Pavlúčenková will fight for the first grand slam single title.
At the beginning of the semifinal match with Sakkari, Krejčíková was struggling to serve, she spoiled a lot, which the Greek used and built up a 3: 1 lead. However, in the next few minutes, the Czech Republic improved the game, started to have the upper hand in long exchanges and, thanks to a string of four games, turned to 5: 3. Although Sakkari equalized to 5: 5 with two clean games, the end of the first set belonged to Krejčík, who was more patient at the decisive moments.
However, Sakkari quickly shook off, added to the aggression and at the beginning of the second act, after two breaks, bounced off Krejčíková 4: 0. The Czech Republic reduced to 4: 5, but Sakkari had already guarded the end of the set. The Greek got on the horse, at the beginning of the third set she took the lead 3: 1 and at 5: 3 she had a swordball available when Krejčík was handed. The Czech turned him away, in the next minutes he turned to 6: 5 and the drama continued.
At 7: 6, Krejčíková did not use three swordsmen when Sakkari was given, but in the end she finally celebrated success. At 8: 7, she transformed the fifth sword ball in a row and achieved her lifetime grand slam success in singles. She has two grand slam titles in the women’s doubles and three in the mix, when she recorded a hat-trick at the Australian Open in 2019-2021.
“I have always dreamed of this as a junior, that I will advance to the grand slam final once in a single and it will be after a very dramatic match. Even in today’s loss, I would be proud of myself, because I put everything into it. 3: 5 in the third set I faced the swordball, but I managed to keep a cool head. It was a fight to the last ball with a happy ending for me. I thank my whole team for the support of the legendary Martina Navrátilová, who watched the duel in terms of ” Krejčíková said in the first post-match interview with former French tennis player Marion Bartoli.
