Czech semiconductor market to halve by 2029 – RT World News

According to the strategy, one of the main arguments for the development of semiconductor technologies is to ensure greater independence and reduce the risk associated with the geographical distribution of production centers.

Today, most manufacturing facilities are in Southeast Asia, especially Taiwan. But the latter is under constant pressure from China, which is also causing tension in the South China Sea, one of the main arteries of global trade. A potential conflict in this area would have a far-reaching impact on the global economy. Therefore, it is appropriate to strengthen the strategic autonomy of the European Union, and therefore the Czech Republic, the material states.

The tripling of production in the semiconductor sector in the Czech Republic by 2029 is the main goal of the strategy. Other goals include increasing the number of employees in the industry to 9,000 people or increasing the share of semiconductor technologies in the Czech Republic’s exports by 200 percent.

Five areas should contribute to the achievement of the strategic objectives. The first is the introduction of a European act on chips and the establishment of a national competence center which should be an entry point to the European ecosystem to support research, development and innovation in the sector semiconductor.

The second strategic area aims to support exports, the third to support research and development, the fourth to increase the number of talents in the semiconductor sector in the Republic Czech and the fifth to support industry in the semiconductor sector.

According to Adam Hanky, data director of the Creative Dock technology group, semiconductor production is a strategic industry for the future of Czech and European industry.

“The EU currently accounts for around ten percent of global semiconductor production, and the European Commission has set itself the goal of doubling this share by 2030. Strategic investments should help to ‘building capacities in the Czech Republic that will allow us to participate in this development. Investments in research and development are important to us, but we should not forget about training employees in this area and attracting talent from abroad,” he said.

Currently there are two factories for the production of semiconductor components in the Czech Republic, which are owned by foreign companies. There is a smaller one in Prague and a larger one in the Zlín Region. Production is focused on analog integrated circuits and discrete semiconductors, on the other hand, memories, logic integrated circuits and micro integrated circuits are not produced at home. In the case of micro integrated circuits and logic integrated circuits, however, the Czech industry can create their design.
