Czech Republic’s Hidden Gold Treasures: Panning for Gold in Czech Streams and Rivers

You may be surprised to learn that you can pan for gold in almost every Czech stream or river. According to geologists, there is a reserve of up to 500 billion crowns in the territory of the Czech Republic. You probably won’t come across gold nuggets, but even a few flakes of pure gold will please you. We will tell you which streams are ideal for beginning gold diggers and where you have the best chance of striking some gold.

The Czech Republic boasts a hidden gold treasure worth up to 500 billion crowns. So we have some of the largest reserves of this precious metal in the world. Experts agree that gold can be panned here in practically any stream or river. But you have to take into account that it will require a certain amount of patience and, above all, that you are carving out only tiny gold flakes. If you wanted to get at least a gram of gold, you would have to spend a lot of time panning, because around 10,000 small flakes fit into one gram.

Gold reserves in the Czech Republic

Gold has attracted people for thousands of years. And despite centuries of mining and panning, plenty of gold nuggets still remain in our rivers and streams. Experts estimate that up to five hundred tons of this precious metal may be hidden under the surface of our country. This makes us one of the richest countries in the world in terms of gold reserves. But beware, gold mining is prohibited in the Czech Republic! The reason is mainly the negative impact of mining on the environment.

As for the history of gold mining in our territory, thanks to archaeological finds, we know that gold was mined in our country already 2 thousand years before Christ.

The richest location

Although gold can be panned here in practically every stream, there are locations where you will come across gold flakes more often. The Kašper Mountains, for example, are known for their rich reserves of gold. Up to a quarter of the underground gold reserves are hidden in this place. It is hard to imagine when walking in the Šumava that a valuable golden treasure is hidden literally a few meters under your feet.

Suitable locations for beginners

If you have no experience panning for gold, you can try this fun, for example, on the river Otava or Sázava. For example, around seven tons of gold are still hidden in Jílové near Prague, according to experts. Not even the surroundings of Pitkovice, Pitkovický potok or even the Vltava are without hope.

You can also try your luck on Opava’s Black, Middle and White rivers, specifically in the area from Vrbno pod Pradědem to Nová Heřminovy. And if you go to Ondřejovice near Zlaté Hory, you can also borrow pans in the open-air gold mining museum there and try panning for gold right there. Gold panning competitions are also held every year in close proximity to the local mining settlement. In 2010, zazen even hosted the World Gold Panning Championship.

How about that

Wherever you decide to pan for gold, you should know how to do it. You will need a rice pan. You will need an ordinary plastic one, which can be purchased for a few crowns. It handles better than metal. In addition, it has coarse grooves on the sides, in which small particles are well captured. Some, on the other hand, prefer metal pans, which they allow to rust slightly. Gold scales settle better on rust. Then take a mixture of gravel and sand from a stream or river into the pan and start to swirl the pan carefully. The stream of water will gradually wash away the lighter particles. In the end, the heavier pieces of gold will remain at the bottom.

There is no wealth like wealth

Although we cannot extract all the gold that is hidden in our land, we can enjoy its symbolic value. It is a treasure that is hidden deep below the surface, but its presence enlivens our imagination and can add magic to our wanderings. However, we should never forget that the true wealth is hidden in the beauty of nature and the cultural heritage entrusted to us.
