Coach Jaroslav Šilhavy’s men remained in second place before the final match of the group, two points behind already certain advancing Albania. To participate in the championship in Germany, the Czechs need at least a draw with fourth-placed Moldova on Monday at home in Olomouc, for which they have two points to spare. Third-placed Poland has already played all eight group matches and lost hope of direct promotion.

Although the national team did not follow up on the 3:1 victory from the March mutual duel at the beginning of the qualification, they did not lose against Poland for the fifth time in the last six matches. Since the division of the federation, the Czech national team has passed all seven European qualifiers and can claim its eighth consecutive participation in the continental championship.

At the end of November, the contract with the team of coach Šilhavé will expire, whose position was in danger after the 0:3 defeat in Albania in October. The management of the association will deal with the coaching position again at the beginning of December.

Šilhavý surprised and unexpectedly put the defender Douděra in the starting line-up, moreover on the left wing, although he usually plays on the right. The Czech coach bet on a formation with three stoppers and one was Zima, who only received an additional invitation. In the attack, Kuchta and Chytil jumped in, in the position of the underarm just like in the last matches in Slavia Provod and between the posts, as expected, Staněk. The main star Lewandowski was not missing from the Polish lineup, on the contrary, due to health problems, Zieliňski, another mainstay, remained only on the bench.

The weather was very cold in Warsaw during the day and it started snowing as the kick-off approached. However, the pitch at the national stadium was in good condition as the game was played under a cloudy roof. Two thousand fans came to the Polish capital to support the Czech team, some of them were brought by a special train. The visiting supporters tried to keep up with the home team in the arena’s auditorium for almost 60,000 spectators, and at times they could be heard.

The Czech national team scored two goals in the opening three minutes in a 3:1 home win over Poland in March and also started actively in the return match. In the second minute, Provoda’s cross flew dangerously through the box and, after Kucht’s subsequent shot across the penalty area, narrowly missed Douděra in a good position.

The Poles threatened mainly from the left side. In the 18th minute, Zalewský’s cross was fortunately deflected into Holeš’s corner. In the next 20 minutes, the home team struck. Zalewski ran away on the left side, Holeš, trying to deflect a ground cross, hit Staňko with the ball in a slide, and Piotrowski reached the net from close range. Midfielder Ludogorca Razgrad scored for the first time in his second start for the national team.

Šilhavý made two substitutions during the break and sent Čvančara and Hložek to the pitch instead of attackers Chytil and Kuchta. The guests started actively and equalized in the 49th minute. After Coufal’s cross, the ball bounced off Bochniewicz’s head to Souček, who did not hesitate. The Czech captain scored his 11th goal for the national A-team and followed up the winning goal from the previous game in a 1-0 win over the Faroe Islands.

In the 55th minute, Lewandowski could have given the lead back to the Poles, who took the ball away from Holeš during the kick-off, but then only hit the upper net with an arc. The Barcelona gunner did not score even in the sixth game against the Czech national team. On the opposite side, after an hour of the game, Zimu failed in an even bigger chance, when he headed wide from close range after a blunder on a small goal.

In the 65th minute, Souček received a kick to the head from Bednarek and finished with a bandage and after two treatments. In the 78th minute, Staněk struggled to eliminate Lewandowski’s attempt from a free kick just beyond the goal, and a moment later, on the opposite side, he missed Douděr with a long-range shot.

Only a victory would keep the Poles in the game, so they opened up the defense a lot in the end. However, Král’s shot at the beginning of the setup was deflected by a defender for a corner, and then even Čvančara failed. Linger’s attempt was saved by the home goalkeeper, then on the opposite side he headed over Bednarek from the corner. The Czech team won only one of the last five matches, the Poles drew 1:1 for the second time in a row.
