Czech Republic: Evacuation of area after discovery of old bomb at chemical plant – 2024-08-22 13:10:21

Czech police said today they evacuated 582 residents from the area where a chemical plant is located near the town of Litvinov in the northwestern Usti region due to a “high risk of explosion” after an unexploded World War II bomb was found.

The bomb was discovered during excavation work in a remote area of ​​the Orlen Unipetrol plant, according to the oil company’s management. Police firemen and firefighters were called to the area. “The bomb, weighing 250 kilograms, will remain in place until August 27. A crisis management team is meeting to decide the next steps,” a police spokesman said earlier.

The Czech News Agency (CNA) points out that in the wider area of ​​Most in the Usti district, near the German border, ammunition from the Second World War era, which had not exploded, has been found several times. In May 2021, about 5,400 people were forced to leave their homes for safety reasons after one such bomb was found near a chemical plant.
