The state energy company of the Czech Republic ČES has started arbitration proceedings against the Russian “Gazprom” in the amount of about 41.4 million euros. This was announced today, February 9, by the press secretary of ČEZ Ladislav Krzhizh.
According to him, the claim against the Russian company is “violation of the contract and reduction in natural gas supplies.” At the same time, the CEO of ČEZ Daniel Benes stated that, in fact, Russia’s energy war against Europe began back in 2021, when Gazprom began to gradually reduce the filling level of gas storage facilities. He also called the initiation of international arbitration proceedings in the case of Gazprom’s violation of the agreement and the reduction in supplies the only possible step to date.
Recall that the Czech Republic condemns Russia for its actions in Ukraine and advocates for increased sanctions pressure on Moscow. In addition, Prague declares its desire to completely get rid of dependence on Russian gas. At the end of January, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Peter Fiala said that in 2022 the republic reduced its dependence on gas supplies from the Russian Federation from 97% to 4%.
