Czech Railways is preparing to deploy wagons with windows that transmit the mobile signal better

Better mobile signal reception even without the installation of repeaters. This comes from a new technology for the production of plated windows Czech Railways promise. The first dozen wagons with new windows are planned to be deployed on selected connections this year.

Train windows have been plated for a long time so that the sun does not shine so much inside. In addition to better passenger comfort, this reduces energy consumption for air conditioning. But metallized windows also significantly dampen the passage of the signal of mobile networks.

How during the measurement in 2016, the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ), just plated windows have a large share in the attenuation. One of the possible solutions are so-called mobile signal repeaters, which convert the signal from the outside into the wagons.

However, Czech Railways now wants to use more Siemens technology, which adjusts the plating of windows so that the attenuation should be significantly lower. A laser microscope is created in the metallized layer by the laser, which improves the passage of the signal. According to Siemens, the signal is up to fifty times stronger than conventional metallized glass.

The raster has a special shape, which was tested by Siemens as the most advantageous in terms of shading sunlight and at the same time facilitating the penetration of mobile signals. “The end result now looks like a collection of hexagonal honeycombs with different edge lengths. This pattern is laser created into a metal coating on window panes. The patterned metal coating is visible if you look at the glass from certain angles. However, this is not disruptive for passengers in normal operation. ” describe Czech Railways.

According to a spokesman for Czech Railways, they have new windows Petr Šťáhlavský gradually have “all new wagons supplied by the Siemens / Škoda consortium and are also installed in selected Škoda cars. In particular, these are the new non-traction units of InterJet. “

On some routes, passengers will see them this year. “These are 50 cars for the West Express and Ore Mountains lines, which will be deployed this year, and 180 cars for new non-traction units intended for lines from Prague to Ústí nad Labem and further to Germany and from Prague to Brno and further to Austria, Slovakia and to Hungary. They are also installed in Škoda Transportatin push-pull vehicles for the Moravian-Silesian Region, ”confirmed Lupa Šťáhlavský.

According to him, the new construction of windows has several advantages over the use of repeaters – the acquisition and operation of repeaters, for example, is relatively expensive and in the event of a transition to new technology must be upgraded. “The advantage of the windows is to ensure easy passage of the signal regardless of the technology (eg 4G, 5G…) and without the need for additional modifications to the technical equipment that would ensure the propagation of the mobile signal inside the car. The currently used technologies of mobile operators are thus immediately available to passengers on the train, ”says Šťáhlavský.
