DAVADMÍ – Czech motorcyclist Jaromír Romančík is experiencing a difficult debut in the famous Dakar Rally. After he was troubled by intestinal problems in the first stage, he was met in the second stage by a technical problem.

He reached his destination only after seven hours and on a quarter of a gas. Despite this, the Orion Moto Racing Group rider said in a press release that he had not considered retiring. Friends from the surrounding area also gathered for his launch.

You hit rock bottom

“I’m proud of myself for being here. I’ve hit rock bottom,” Romančík said after reaching the finish line.

The thirty-two-year-old competitor has already started in Šesťdňová, he also participated in races in the USA and Canada. However, he was at a loss when faced with difficulties in the second stage. “I went well in the morning, we started with the dunes. One of the factory riders overtook me, so I stuck with him. Suddenly, at the 40th kilometer in the dunes, where there is nothing, my bike died. I didn’t know what to do,” described Romančík.

During the inspection of the KTM motorcycle, he removed the tanks, checked the electronics and the spark plug. “I was wondering what to do with it. Then my teammate Martin Prokeš came and handed me the injector. I managed to change it in the sand. Two or three cars were already going and suddenly the bike caught. I assembled the tanks and went out onto the track, where all the motorbikes and four-wheelers have already passed,” explained Romančík.

At the 260th kilometer of the stage, however, his bike stopped working again. “I disassembled the coils and the motorcycle seized again. I rode it for another thirty kilometers, then it died again. Terrible stage, I had to disassemble the motorcycle fifteen times” remarked Romančík.

He also had to slow down significantly. “Approximately a hundred kilometers to the end, I found out that when I go to a quarter of the gas and the bike has no resistance, I somehow manage to do it. I finished the stage, but my bike died again at the finish line.” he said.

He reached his destination after seven hours

He reached his destination after seven hours. He is 71st in the standings with almost four hours behind the leader, Chilean José Ignacio Cornejo Florim. “I fought my way through the dark, it took me seven hours to get to the bivouac. This has never happened to me before. It was a struggle, but I’m here.” said Romančík.

Although he considered letting himself be dragged away, he had no thoughts of resigning. People from his village Fojtka pri Mníšek gathered for Romančík’s first start at the Dakar Rally.

“He definitely feels the support strongly, especially from his family. This motivates him a lot. Jarda showed what a great fighter he is and that is very much appreciated at the Dakar. Now we are mainly dealing with the technical condition of his bike, we are consulting directly with the people from KTM.” said team boss Ervín Krajčovič.
