Czech Long-Distance Runner Dies in Tragic Climbing Accident: Jirka Pliska Remembered

The 42-year-old died in a tragic climbing accident in Wyoming in the USA last weekend.

Pliska was team captain for the Czech Ski Classics team. He was one of the Czech Republic’s leading long-distance runners, and has, among other things, been in the top 20 in Marcialonga, writes Langrenn.com who mentioned the matter first.

The Czech was number 21 in the Birkebeinerrittet last year. Pliska finished just over three minutes behind the winner Andreas Nygaard.

The accident is said to have occurred in the Wind River Range at an altitude of 3,700 metres. Pliska was a keen climber, and was named climber of the year in the Czech Republic in 2013.

– He was one of the best Czech runners. We haven’t had much contact, but we’ve been to a lot of the same ski runs in recent years. He was an enthusiastic type who was always in a good mood. My thoughts go out to the family and his loved ones, says Nygaard to Dagbladet.

Ed system Silvini Team writes in a press release that the Czech will be deeply missed.

– He is primarily remembered for who he was. Pliska was himself, naturally tough and never afraid to stand up for the weaker and what he believed in, without caring what others might think, writes Ed system Silvini Team.

– He was honest, loved his spouse and was always a support for his loved ones. Jirka died where he felt most at home, and in the pursuit of the activity he loved. He will forever be in our hearts and memories and we will miss him every day
