The first Miss World was organized in 1951 by British bingo lottery pioneer Eric Morley. He gave it the name Festival Bikini Contest, the media rechristened it Miss World. Due to its great success, Morley decided to hold the pageant every year. Perhaps he was also prompted by the advent of the Californian competition, which in 1952 started with Miss Universe.
