The Czech female tennis players did not do well at the tournament in rainy Montreal on Thursday. Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová ended up in the round of 16, losing to American Cori Gauffová, Karolína Muchová lost in three sets to world number one Iga Šwiateková, and Marie Bouzková also failed against Russian Darje Kasatkinová.
Petra Kvitová missed the match with Olympic champion Belinda Bencicová.
Muchová lost to Šwiatek 1:6, 6:4 and 4:6 in a match that lasted nine hours while waiting for the end of the rainy weather. After the successful replay of the final of this year’s Roland Garros, the Polish favorite is sure that she will remain at the top of the rankings after the tournament.
After equalizing 1:1 in sets, the tennis players had to go to the locker room, and after returning, Šwiatek managed to break. They did not finish the second game again, the rain drove them out again. After that, Muchová couldn’t make up for the loss of serve.
“It was an exceptional day, I don’t think I’ve experienced such a situation before. You have to find the energy, even if we’ve been here since nine o’clock in the morning,” said the twenty-two-year-old Šwiateková.
The ninth-seeded Vondroušová lost to the tournament’s number six Gauffová 3:6, 0:6, and her streak of nine victories came to an end. The American, on the other hand, confirmed her great form as she won the trophy in Washington on Sunday. Bouzková was not enough for Kasatkinová, the Russian tennis player won 6:3, 6:4.
