Czech conductor Petr Bublka will take over the musical direction of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra as of next September, more than a year after the unexpected resignation of Colombian Andres Orozco Estrada.
The prestigious band indicated that the 37-year-old musician will lead more than 20 shows during the next season before taking over completely in 2024-2025 for five years.
“It’s a dream come true,” Pobelka said on his website, adding: “As a teenager I used to go frequently to Vienna with my parents to listen to the greatest orchestras in the world.”
He continued, “The Vienna Orchestra, for me, is a musical embodiment of Vienna, and it is an orchestra that reflects the spirit of the Austrian capital.”
Born in Prague in 1986, Poblka is currently Music Director of the Oslo Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. A spokeswoman for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra said Poblka will succeed Andres Orozco Estrada, who resigned in April 2022 due to “irresolvable differences”.
