20 Czech citizens were given permission to join the armed forces of Ukraine. Czech leader Petar Pavel spoke about this in one of the local television programs on February 25, reports Ukrinform.
Another 56 applications were rejected based on recommendations from the defense and interior ministries, he said. As Pavel reported, the reason for the rejection of admission applications “is the non-compliance of the applicants with the set criteria”.
The Czech president also criticized the insufficient material aid from Western countries to the Ukrainian army in recent years, as well as the level of their investment in their own defense capabilities. He stated that in the last two years, the European Union has not produced a single new tank, and the production of large-caliber ammunition in the countries of the European community significantly lags behind their production in the Russian Federation.
“For two years, Russia has managed to learn from its mistakes and mobilize its military industry, but it has not yet been able to achieve significant success. Ukraine turned out to be able to return part of the annexed territory in two years, push the Russian fleet out of the western part of the Black Sea, preserving the combat capability of the army and the determination of the population to defend itself,” says Pavel.
In this regard, he stated that the debt of the Western countries to Ukraine consists in the fact that they failed to deliver a sufficient amount of high-quality equipment and ammunition for a successful and rapid counteroffensive.
“The Ukrainians launched a counteroffensive on a broad front, instead of, for example, dividing the occupied territory into northern and southern parts, thus complicating the supply of the army,” noted the Czech president.
At the same time, Pavel believes that “the conflict in Ukraine will not end quickly, as neither Russia nor Ukraine is able to achieve their goals.”
“It is logical that Ukraine should seek to restore full control over its territory within internationally recognized borders, which should in principle be supported… Russian President Vladimir Putin, after his expected re-election as head of state, will seek to achieve at least partial goals – full control over the annexed regions, especially over Donbas,” Pavel said.
Mutual fatigue from the conflict is likely to lead to negotiations, he believes. At the same time, today Peter Pavel is not afraid of the possibility of the Ukrainian conflict spreading to NATO member states.
“Currently, Russia is so weakened by the conflict in Ukraine that it will not risk a conflict with NATO countries. However, this cannot be ruled out in the future, especially if Russia achieves significant success in Ukraine,” the Czech leader said.
