Prime Minister of West Bengal: disaster bigger than Corona

More than 80 people were killed in India and Bangladesh by the devastating hurricane “Amphan”. At least 72 people died in the particularly affected northeastern state of West Bengal, said the head of government on Thursday. The disaster was bigger than Corona and it took several days to assess the full extent of the damage.
The storm has been one of the worst storms in the region in the past 20 years, according to Indian meteorological service. The people died, for example, from collapsing houses or falling trees, as the competent authorities said. In large parts of the city of Kolkata in West Bengal, which has a population of 15 million, the electricity failed.
The city’s airport was completely flooded, with overturned electricity pylons and overturned cars, as television pictures showed. However, many people survived because more than three million had been brought to emergency shelters before Storm “Amphan” reached the mainland on Wednesday.
