Cyclists give NRW cities bad marks – this is how Cologne scores

When it comes to the conditions and the traffic climate for cyclists, Cologne does not do well in a nationwide survey. It is no better for other cities in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Of the 14 metropolises in Germany, Cologne has the worst reputation among cyclists. The NRW state capital Düsseldorf achieved at least eighth place among the cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants. In the last three places, however, are Essen, Dortmund and Cologne. The three most bicycle-friendly cities in Germany are Bremen, Hanover and Frankfurt am Main.

The “bicycle climate” test, which is carried out every two years together with the Federal Ministry of Transport, is not representative, but is considered a barometer of sentiment.

In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, more than 60,000 people took part in the online survey this year, around 20,000 more than in 2019. The questions covered, among other things, the cyclist’s feeling of safety, conflicts with pedestrians or drivers, or the quality of cycle paths.
