Latvian cyclist Toms Skujiņš from the “Trek-Segafredo” team on Friday won the high 11th place in the seventh stage of the prestigious multi-day competition “Tour de France”.
On Friday, cyclists measured the longest section of the tour, which stretched 249.1 kilometers with five categorized climbs.
The distance was measured the fastest by Slovenian Matthew Mohorich (“Bahrain – Victorious”), who finished in five hours, 28 minutes and 20 seconds. He was one minute and 20 seconds ahead of Skujiņš ‘teammate from Belgium, Jasper Stujven, but third place winner Magnus Korts from Denmark (“EF Education – Nippo”) was one minute and 40 seconds behind.
At the very beginning of the stage, Skujiņš was one of the 24 cyclists in the leading group. The Latvian cyclist reached the finish two minutes and 45 seconds behind the leader, taking 11th place.
Another Trek-Segafredo representative, Vincenzo Nibali from Italy, finished two positions below.
The leader of the overall standings, the Dutchman Matier van der Pool (“Alpecin-Fenix”), finished with Cort and took fourth place. Slovenian Tadej Pogachar (UAE), who previously took second place in the overall standings, also lost important seconds. He lost five minutes and 15 seconds to the winner, finishing in 26th place.
Debutant van der Pool is still in the lead, Belgium’s Vouts van Arts (“Jumbo-Visma”) climbed to second place and loses half a minute to the leader, but the third with a minute and 49 seconds deficit is Kasper Asgren from Denmark (“Deceuninck – Quick Step”) . Thanks to Friday’s performance, the herringbone has risen by 12 places in the overall standings and is in 16th place with a deficit of five minutes and 34 seconds.
In the eighth stage of the tour, cyclists will have a distance of 150.8 kilometers, the end of which includes three ascents of the first category.
The Tour de France will end on July 18 with a finish in the Champs Elysées. Six days after the final stage of the “Tour de France”, the cycling competition for the Tokyo Olympic Games will begin, so the multi-day trip has been postponed to a slightly earlier time this year.
The Tour de France is taking place for the 108th time. The 21-stage race will only take place on French roads this year, although the start was originally planned in Copenhagen. Seven of the stages will be more convenient for sprinters.
For the fourth year in a row, Skujiņš will start in the “Tour de France” ranks of the “Trek-Segafredo” team, who in the first half of June was crowned Latvian champion in the group and also in the individual race.
