The accident took place around 7 p.m. when the cyclist, coming from the direction of the intersection with Stoutenburgerweg, crossed the road to the Sionskerk and was hit by a car coming from behind. The impact landed the victim tens of meters further into the verge.

Police traffic experts are investigating the exact cause of the collision. This includes examining a long brake track on the car. Police have arrested the 33-year-old driver as a suspect. “His whereabouts are unknown,” a spokeswoman said. The 33-year-old is suspected of dangerous driving and causing a serious accident.

Police have recorded statements from several witnesses. Camera images of the Sionskerk have also been secured for the investigation. Churchgoers could walk home after the Thanksgiving service via the roadside. Those who had left their cars in the church parking lot had to walk home. The vehicles were recovered after the police investigation was completed. The Hoevelakenseweg was closed until around 11 p.m. in connection with the investigation of traces. The car and bicycle were removed by a recovery company.
