(See ‘Cyclist hit and killed…’ at 1.13pm) Carlo Conversa, a 77-year-old retired doctor, is the alleged perpetrator of the accident in which Roberto Casiello, the 61-year-old cyclist who died on the morning of October 29 while traveling along state road 17 Foggia-Lucera. The doctor, resident in Acquaviva delle Fonti, apparently fled without providing assistance: he was arrested and placed under house arrest by the police.
The images from the surveillance cameras of a fuel station along state road 17 were decisive for the identification of the man, from which the passage of the cyclist at 9.11 am on 29 October and the passage of a Chevrolet Trax at 9.13 am can be seen. The soldiers of the Carabinieri, through the analysis, with specialists in the sector, of the parts of the damaged vehicle found at the accident site, and from the viewing of other video footage, have traced back to the car, the license plate and its driver who , after the accident, he returned to Acquaviva delle Fonti. The police tracked down the vehicle parked in front of the 77-year-old’s home with extensive damage to the bodywork. The same doctor reportedly told the police that he had taken a wrong turn and had hit something, but that he had not noticed what it actually was.
During the following hours, the police listened to a body shop worker from Acquaviva delle Fonti who had been repeatedly contacted by the man since the morning of the 29th, who reportedly told the police that the retired doctor had confided to him that he had “run over a person”, a confession which would have pushed the car repairman to return the keys of the damaged car to Conversa.
