The man lost his balance and fell into the water from the bike path. A female alligator about 2.7 meters long approached the man and bit him. The man managed to break free from the animal and crawled to one side, where a bystander could help him.
Charlie Shannon, who was walking his dog at the time, told WPTV that the victim suffered injuries to his leg, particularly his hip. “He was almost 1.5 meters lower than I was standing at the time, so it was difficult to help him out of the water.
Pulled out of the water
Shannon was eventually able to make a loop with the dog leash and along with five others he was able to pull the cyclist out of the water.
The victim was eventually transported by helicopter to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
The alligator was captured after the incident and transferred to a special shelter.
