Indonesian Hit-and-Run Leaves Cyclist Dead; Driver Faces Charges
A 63-year-old cyclist, identified as PN, died early Tuesday morning, December 24th, after being struck by a Mercedes-Benz in a hit-and-run incident in Surabaya, Indonesia. The incident occurred Monday afternoon, December 23rd, leaving the community reeling and demanding accountability.
PN’s son, EZ, confirmed his mother’s passing at approximately 2:00 AM local time. She was laid to rest at 10:00 AM at the Islamic Cemetery in Sukolilo Baru, Bulak, Surabaya.
While the driver’s family, identified as belonging to SU (38), has offered an apology and compensation, according to PN’s sister-in-law, DW, the family is also seeking justice. DW stated, “Yes, actually voice yes (I apologized). Not to say more, but when the victim needs funds for seven days, 40 days, 100 days, we are ready to help.”
Though, DW emphasized the need for criminal prosecution, adding, “Yes, the accidental loss of life falls within the realm of criminal law according to applicable law. Moreover, driving out of control.”
Police investigations revealed that SU, the driver, was intoxicated at the time of the accident. he reportedly lost control of his vehicle, striking not only PN but also five other vehicles – a mix of cars, motorcycles, and bicycles – in the Kenjeran area.
The incident began in the Pakuwon City area,where SU initially struck the cyclist before fleeing the scene. He continued his reckless driving to Jalan Kenjeran, where the multiple-vehicle collision occurred, resulting in one car ending up in a river.
