Cycling village Rijsbergen collects 10,000 euros

RIJSBERGEN – Ruud van der Meijden completed a 1,000-kilometer cycle tour on Monday 7 September, criss-crossing the Netherlands. He finished in Maastricht. Van der Meijden used it to raise money for scientific research into cardiovascular diseases. This is done by the Boxtel scientist Rogier Veltrop, who has had a donor heart for five years.

Veltrop has succeeded in converting blood cells into stem cells. He then uses this to make beating heart cells. These new heart cells can replace broken and diseased parts of the heart. For his research, the scientist associated with Maastricht University needs equipment and materials worth 100,000 euros.
A delegation from cycling village Rijsbergen and councilor Twan Zophi supported Ruud on Monday during his last ride from Boxtel to Maastricht. A check for € 10,000 has been handed over for this charity, an amount that was collected through crowdfunding campaigns from fundraiser Ruud van der Meijden and Wielerdorp Rijsbergen, a very good result.
