Pogacar phenomenon! Triumph also in Siena, relive the arrival
Chronicle
On the first two stretches of dirt road the breakaway of the day starts and in front they find themselves in 9 who immediately gain more than 5 ‘on the group. Attacking are Bevilacqua and Sergio García (Eolo Kometa), Brenner and Heinschke (DSM), Davide Martinelli (Astana), Zoccarato (Bardiani-CSF-Faizané), Zardini (Drone Hopper Androni Toys) and Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché -Wanty Gobert). The situation is substantially unchanged up to -100 km, when a sensational group crash is created due to the crosswind. End up on the ground Valverde, Gogl, Campenaerts, Benoot and the great favorite Alaphilippe who performs in a sensational 360. The Frenchman manages to get back into the group, somehow, while Gogl, Benoot and Campenaerts retire.
Alaphilippe on the ground! Sensational 360 on the dirt road, but it starts again
The stretch of Monte Sante Maria could have been the decisive one and so it is, with the attack of Pogacar which takes everyone by surprise downhill at -50.3 km from the finish. Alaphilippe replies, but immediately raises the white flag. The only one who tries to keep up with the Slovenian is Carlos Rodríguez. Alaphilippe can’t take it anymore and leaves the green light to Asgreen: the Dane thus starts at -22 from the finish with a blaze, shortening to 1 ‘from Pogacar. He only carries Quinn Simmons, Valverde, Wellens and Narváez, with Carlos Rodríguez who had already been recovered after a mechanical failure.
Pogacar leaves everyone behind: relive the attack on the dirt road
However, Pogacar’s action is incessant, with the Slovenian also showing that he knows how to manage himself well (as he did at the last Giro di Lombardia). Behind, however, there is no collaboration and so Asgreen tries to do it alone again starting before the last stretch of dirt road. Valverde keeps him company and in the last 10 km they give the impression of being able to suck something from the Slovenian. The two go 45 ” away but, after the last stretch of dirt road, there is nothing to hold Pogacar back. He won this too!
