The mayor of Chelsea, Pierre Guénard, will participate from June 8 to 11 in the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie, a 1,000 km cycling race to promote healthy lifestyles, the Union des municipalités du Québec announced in early May. (UMQ).

The announcement was made during the gala evening of merit Ovation municipal les Assises 2023 de l’UMQ. His cycling team will shine for a seventh year in this relay race behind triathlete Pierre Lavoie, who will cover the entire circuit in 70 hours, from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean to Montreal.

Pierre Guénard and the bike : A nice story

On his Facebook page, the mayor of Chelsea promotes the month of May “cycling month”, on the occasion of a bicycle outing entitled ” Ride with the Mayor organized this Saturday, May 20. The Municipality’s page even indicates that “active transportation is one of [ses] priorities”. Mr. Guénard points out that they have Vélosympathique certification.

“The UMQ is proud to participate in the thirteenth edition of the 1,000 kilometers of the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie to promote the practice of physical activity, especially among young people. Congratulations to the municipalities, elected officials and municipal teams who will warmly welcome our team of cyclists and the some 200 others who will parade on their territory next June,” said Michel Angers, team captain.

  • Daniel Cournoyer, Acting Mayor of Trois-Rivières;
  • Nancy Déziel, councilor for Shawinigan;
  • Catherine Lassonde, Councilor for Drummondville;
  • Mario Sévigny, team driver and Drummondville councillor.

All profits generated by the event will be donated to the Fondation du Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie to support medical research on orphan diseases and fund projects aimed at adopting healthy lifestyles.
