Cyberpunk 2077: With ray tracing, DLSS and on GeForce NOW

In the environment of yesterday’s Cyberpunk 2077 event, NVIDIA also had a lot to announce. Among other things, RTX and DLSS support and good news for GeForce NOW owners.

Cyberpunk 2077 will already support features of the GeForce RTX graphics cards at launch, which PC owners can certainly look forward to. In addition to ray tracing effects, DLSS 2.0 should also be supported.

DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is an NVIDIA RTX technology that uses AI to increase frame rates while producing beautiful, crisp images in games. In Cyberpunk 2077, DLSS 2.0 is intended to offer gamers the necessary scope to increase graphics settings and increase output resolution. DLSS works by “training” a deep neural network on tens of thousands of high-resolution beautiful images that are rendered offline in a supercomputer at very low frame rates and 64 samples per pixel.

With regard to ray tracing, the following features should be supported according to NVIDIA:

  • Surrounding with ray tracing – Ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique that calculates how much each point in a scene is exposed to ambient lighting. The result is a diffuse shading effect that darkens closed and protected areas and improves the overall tone of the rendered image. In Cyberpunk 2077, environmental occlusion with ray tracing can be used with local lights to emulate local shadow effects when there are no shadows.
  • Diffuse lighting with ray tracing – This technique is used to capture both sky radiation and emissive lighting from different surfaces, which is difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques.
  • Reflections with ray tracing – In Cyberpunk 2077, ray tracing reflections are applied to all surfaces and can extend over several kilometers. Present on both opaque and transparent objects and surfaces, they simulate the way light is reflected from shiny and metallic surfaces by tracking a single reflection beam in the scene. This includes smooth natural mirrors such as window glass, but also rougher surfaces such as brushed metal. While screen space technologies only reflect what is on the screen, ray tracing reflections incorporate the entire scene around the character. This enables them to precisely represent objects that are outside the camera or facing away from the camera.
  • Shadows with ray tracing – The preview of Cyberpunk 2077 supports directional shadows from the sun and moon. These shadows are said to be physically accurate and even take into account the light scatter from clouds. The shadows can be enhanced in the final version to support other types of light sources where necessary.

There is also good news for owners of the GeForce NOW cloud gaming service. When Cyberpunk 2077 hits the market on November 19, it will be available with ray tracing support and DLSS 2.0 on GeForce NOW. This means Cyberpunk 2077 can be experienced even on an old PC, Mac, SHIELD or Android device with 1080p 60 FPS, provided your data line provides enough bandwidth.
